Forest and Swamp Chronicles

New Zealand Pigeon

The New Zealand pigeon, or kererū, is a striking bird found in the forests of New Zealand. It is easily recognized by its iridescent green and bronze plumage, contrasting with its white chest. The kererū plays a crucial role in the ecosystem as a seed disperser, capable of eating large fruits that smaller birds cannot manage.

These pigeons are typically seen perching in trees or flying gracefully in wide, sweeping arcs. Their diet consists of native berries, leaves, and flowers. They are particularly fond of fruits from trees such as miro and tawa, making them essential for regenerating native forests.

Though not currently endangered, the kererū faces threats from habitat destruction, predation by introduced species, and competition for food. Conservation efforts, including predator control and forest restoration, are essential for maintaining their populations.
