Indian Rhinoceros
The Indian rhinoceros, also known as the one-horned rhinoceros, is a majestic herbivore found in the wetlands and grasslands of northern India and Nepal. Weighing up to 4,000 pounds, this species is distinguished by its thick, armor-like skin and a single black horn.
These rhinos are primarily grazers, feeding on tall grasses, fruits, and aquatic plants. They are often seen wallowing in muddy pools, which helps them regulate their body temperature and ward off insects. Indian rhinos are generally solitary but can be found in small groups near water sources.
Thanks to successful conservation efforts in national parks like Kaziranga, the population of Indian rhinos has increased in recent decades. However, they remain vulnerable to poaching and habitat loss, emphasizing the need for continued protection.
