Forest and Swamp Chronicles

Common Garden Lizard

The common garden lizard, or calotes, is a small yet fascinating reptile found in forests, gardens, and suburban areas across South Asia. These lizards are known for their ability to change colors, often turning vibrant shades of red or green during courtship or when threatened.

They are insectivores, playing a vital role in controlling insect populations in their habitats. In forests, they climb trees and shrubs to hunt for beetles, ants, and other prey. Male garden lizards are territorial, often engaging in head-bobbing displays to assert dominance.

Though not endangered, their habitats are increasingly encroached upon by urbanization. Preserving forested areas ensures these colorful reptiles continue to thrive in the wild.
